Pre-Fall ’14 Round Up

While you were busy decorating gingerbread men and buying presents for loved ones designers were lining up must have looks for Pre-Fall ’14. Let us recap the yays and nays of Pre-Fall ’14.

Asymmetrical

A major trend for the season is, as expected, asymmetrical details. The asymmetricality can be subtle, like Opening Ceremony’s wonderful white dress, or severe like this fabulous blue an yellow rendition by Cut25 Yigal Azrouel.

 Leather

Whether your shopping destinations are upscale or high street, everyone has noticed the leather details trend on the street scene. I’m personally a great fan of this look, as it perks up my otherwise rather bland work attire of black dresses (as sequins aren’t unfortunately considered appropriate business wear). However, it is becoming criminally overused, and is thus cheapening the once cool and interesting look. But leather details are still holding their own for 2014 where designers are concerned. Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Rag & Bone show how it’s done.

Every season has its hits and misses. This season the misses weren’t so much “what is this?”, but rather “why must we go through this again?” The lookbooks featured trends that I thought had already been kindly entertained. But a few of of them have managed to crawl back into the racks.

Short Over Long

This was indeed socially acceptable around 2007, a time when I was thankfully too young to be attending anything important where pictures might have been taken. But wearing short sleeved shirts over long sleeves is back again. Admittedly the looks that designers put together are a little less squeezed-this- sports-bra-over-my-baggy-T-shirt and a little more creative, but it still not a look I care to resurrect. Then there was the wearing of the dresses and skirts over pants and jeans of all things. Please let this graphic monotone ensemble from Phillip Lim not be an indication that this is what we are headed back toward.

A special note should be given to the hair style trend of the season: a brunette bob. Seen above at Lim and below at Nonoo.
