On Friday October 4th designer Emma Liljedahl showcased the Spring/Summer 2014 collection of the brand Apollonius at Fashion Week Brooklyn in Industry City. Fashion Week Brooklyn is annually held to support talented designers in the United States and across the globe. This four day “Be Inspired” event was sponsored by Bk Style, a non-profit foundation.
Emma Liljedahl’s menswear collection was inspired by “urban streetwear.” The models displayed ready to wear looks that were both trendy and comfortable. The collection ranged from pullover sweaters to tunic’s. Her main inspiration source as she states was in, “basic menswear pieces of soft, masculine silhouettes and minimalistic lines.”
The collection was a breath of fresh air with clean cut looks, in which fabric played a big part. “I wanted to mix delicate fabrics like linen and soft cotton jersey and the clean print with sporty streetwear look,” says Liljedahl. She goes on to explain that she wanted to dress up a basic garment such as a t-shirt. These garments are used in your everyday look so rather than tarnishing that basic need, Liljedahl just revitalized it by incorporating different patterns and cuts.
The collection showcased sporty, ready to wear pieces in a color palette that ranged from white to a blue print. Her collection revolved around this print that Liljedahl reveals was inspired by an airplane, “ I took [the print] from an airplane while I was travelling. It’s a picture of a field covered with snow. I just loved the picture; it was so clean in its colours and lines.”
Everything in the Apollonius collection was well executed and carefully thought out. Even the models expressed the desert wanderer theme. What set this collection apart from others was that each model sported a white mask to shield their mouth and face.
“The idea of separating the model from the clothing within the inspiration got to be important to me, so the clothes are not dependent on the model to get the right impression of the collection,” she says.
Originally from Oslo, Norway Liljedahl has a few accomplishments under her belt. She attended ESMOD, a fashion school in Oslo and graduated in 2011 with a collection entitled “Those Who Wander the Desert.” After graduating she worked in Stockholm, Sweden as a design intern for V Ave Shoe Repair. In January 2013 she showcased her second collection, “Basic Necessities,” at the biannual independent fashion show in Oslo.
Emma Liljedahl is already hard at work on her next collection, which she plans to showcase in February 2014 at a New York location. To view the complete Apollonius Brand check out http://apolloniusclothing.com
